Booking choice: The private day trip from Hurghada, from $169 per person. Check dates Tour details
Luxor is roughly 290 km from Hurghada by road, inland through the mountains to Safaga and then across the desert to Qena and the Nile. Every listing gives about 4 hours each way. That leaves you around 3 hours at the sites and a long day of 12 to 16 hours.
Is it worth it? If this is your only trip to Egypt, yes: the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut are not things you can see anywhere else. Here is how to make the day work, and when to skip it for a night in Luxor.
The quick answer
Yes, if you accept 8 hours on the road for about 3 hours at the sites. A private car ($169 with tickets, lunch and a felucca) is far more comfortable than the shared minibus ($35, tickets optional). Pickup is 4:30 to 5:00, return 20:00 to 22:00. Bring your passport. From Marsa Alam add an hour each way. If you can spare a night, stay in Luxor instead: you see twice as much for less road.

Is a day trip to Luxor from Hurghada worth it?
Yes, for most people who will not get another chance. You trade about 8 hours in a car for 3 hours among the best sights in Egypt.
The Hurghada trips rate 4.3 to 4.9. The praise is for the sites and the guides; the complaints are about the hours. A guest on the small-group trip summed it up: "Firstly be prepared, this is a long day but well worth it." Another: "Full long day but totally mind blowing so glad we went".
Skip it with small children, in July and August if you hate heat, or if your holiday is under a week. And if Luxor matters to you more than one day's worth, read the overnight section below first.
Private car, Egyptologist, tickets, lunch and a felucca: the long day done the comfortable way.
Check dates for the private day trip from HurghadaHow long is the drive from Hurghada to Luxor?
About 4 hours each way, via Safaga and Qena. Pickup is 4:30 to 5:00, and you are back around 20:00 to 22:00.
The private Legacy Tour trip starts at 5:00; the small-group minibus at 4:30. The road is a good highway, mostly empty, with police checkpoints and speed bumps near the Nile valley. A Marsa Alam guest noticed that "although the drive was long, the roads were quiet."
Expect one rest stop each way. Sleep on the way out; you will want the energy at the tombs. A small-group guest got back at "10.35 (after a flat tyre on the way back due to the heat)", so don't plan a dinner booking.

Private or small-group: which Hurghada trip should you book?
Private if you can afford it. You leave when you are ready, the guide works for you, and the tickets and lunch are included.
The two from Hurghada:
| Private | Small group | |
|---|---|---|
| Tour | Private trip from Hurghada | Small-group trip from Hurghada |
| From | $169 | $35 |
| Vehicle | Private air-conditioned car | Shared air-conditioned minivan |
| Sites | Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi, Karnak, Luxor | Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi |
| Tickets | Included | Optional extra |
| Lunch | Included, plus a felucca ride | Included, Nile restaurant |
| Pickup | 5:00, passport copy the day before | 4:30; El Gouna and Sahl Hasheesh cost extra |
| Length | 12 to 16 hours | About 16 hours |
The budget trip gets fair marks for its guides and poor ones for lunch and sales stops. One guest called the lunch room "poor" and warned of "rather heavy attempts to sell you trinkets". Guests also report paying different prices for the same seat, so compare options before you pay. Book the ticket option if you take it: otherwise you pay at each gate by card.

The cheapest seat from Hurghada: a shared minivan, a guide and lunch. Choose the option with entry tickets.

The Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, a photo stop at the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak. Some trips add a felucca ride or Luxor Temple.
The private trip runs Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, the Colossi, then across the river to Karnak, with lunch and a short sail on the Nile. A March 2026 guest did it the other way round: "Karnak Temples, followed by a scenic boat tour on the Nile. After a good lunch, we continued to the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut."
Expect about an hour at Hatshepsut's temple. Know what you're looking at before you arrive: the history guide has a one-hour route.

Do you need a passport for a Luxor trip from Hurghada?
Yes. Carry the original, and send a copy to the operator the day before if they ask, as the private trip does.
Legacy Tour asks for your hotel name, room number and "a copy of your passport at least one day before the tour." The desert road has police checkpoints, and tourist vehicles carry passenger details. Without a passport you risk being turned back. A phone photo is not a substitute.
How do you get to Luxor from Marsa Alam?
By road, about 5 hours each way on the listing, so the day starts very early. The private Marsa Alam trip costs $121 with tickets and lunch.
The private trip from Marsa Alam by Luxor Egypt Tours covers the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, the Colossi and Karnak, with lunch, tickets and a guide, rated 4.9. A guest found the drive shorter than listed: "the trip to Luxor took about 4 hours". Plan on 9 to 12 hours, and on 5 hours if your hotel is south of the town.

From the far south coast: private car, Egyptologist, lunch and all the tickets for Hatshepsut, the royal tombs and Karnak.
Explore the day trip from Marsa Alam Tour detailsCan you fly from Hurghada to Luxor instead?
Yes. Air Cairo flies Hurghada to Luxor non-stop a few times a week, about 1 hour 5 minutes in the air.
Schedules change by season; check the current HRG to LXR timetable before planning around it. Flight times rarely suit a day trip: you would need an early flight out and a late one back, plus airport transfers and check-in. Flying makes more sense one way, as the start of a night or two in Luxor.
Is it better to stay overnight in Luxor?
Yes, if you can spare one night. You see the West Bank at 6:00 before the Red Sea buses arrive, and you can add the balloon or Karnak at night.
The Red Sea coaches reach the West Bank mid-morning, right when it's hottest and busiest. Stay over and the day looks different: West Bank at opening, a rest at midday, Karnak or Luxor Temple in the evening. Next morning, a sunrise balloon over the temple you saw the day before.
Take a bus or a private transfer to Luxor, then book the private West Bank day from your Luxor hotel. In July and August, bring more water than you think. A guest on the budget trip: "If you had 32° in Hurghada, count 40° on the sites visited in Luxor. You NEED a minimum of 2.5 litres of water per person".

Staying in Luxor? Start at 6:00 with a private Egyptologist and the entry tickets for six West Bank sites.

How early is pickup for a Luxor trip from Hurghada?
Between 4:30 and 5:00 on the trips here. The operator confirms the exact time the day before.
Is the Hurghada to Luxor road safe?
It is a busy tourist route with police checkpoints, used by tour vehicles every day. Choose an operator with good reviews of its driving, and wear the seat belt.
Can children do the Luxor day trip from Hurghada?
They can, but 8 hours on the road plus heat is hard on small children. One guest did not recommend it for young kids. A night in Luxor is kinder.

On the private trip ($169), yes. On the small-group trip ($35), only if you pick the option with entry fees.
